Zines! You could call them newsletters, whatever- you could get into a big wine & cheese discussion about how sad it is that print is passe. You could take a huge swig of Zinfandel and remind mofos that although big time newspapers are shedding their grays & biting the dust, smaller print satellites (think college papers, east coast train-reading rags) still cruise along, perhaps gaining readers via voids of dead giants. I’m not here to big up the power of blogs. I do this blizzy for fun and promotion. But the hoops you had to leap through to express yourself journalistically got you appropriately fit to really want to continue telling it. Blah, blah, blahg- here are some zines:
- Adam Myerson’s Propaganda threw graff, the struggle of skating (having any damn fun) in Massachusetts, & music as the 80s turned to the 90s
- The Ruiz brothers covered what the Brockton Enterprise didn’t with skate pics, local art & loco stories. 1990 Brockton, MA
- Bill Florio, king of NYHC zine-making and lord of wise asses always did it real big with hilarious disses that Vice would’a killed for 10 years later…
- From Smashin’ Through to Greedy Bastard- everyone got what they deserved with Florio’s east coast elbow to the eye
- Handmade comics like ‘Alfe’ by Ben Jones: Weirder than your weirdest friend & funnier than Seinfeld
- If there was a ‘zine called Haters it would have to be from Boston. There was and it was!
- Pacificohigh- just like it sounds. A zinester’s ‘zine from Cali- well worth the $1 spent
- Don’t be fooled by the B&W cover- zines like Miscreant had crispy centerfolds of full-color street art & ‘nuf articles
- Jello Biafra put a ‘zine in most of his records as liner notes. Bought the tape? you could send for it
- I learned about H. Milk from Jello’s liner notes zine many years ago
- Al Haney’s Decontrol was in the late 90s Boston nightlife mix . Top notch pics & layout almost had it glossy
- Modern Arizona 6 even came with a mix CD. Good personal stories, clippings & comics were pure zine-aesthetical
- When your daddy was helping you setup your first AOL account, Media Whore was being stitched together with red thread & affixed with a custom label
- Some fool made a ‘zine documenting all the FM/AM radio stations in Boston a few years ago (me)
ZINES… To be continued !
